New Grand PianosGrand pianos are regarded by many as the ultimate choice in pianos. This is partly because of their beautiful shape, but mainly because they display superior sound. The soundboard of a grand piano is not placed vertically against a wall like an upright piano, but horizontally to the floor with some distance between the floor and the piano allowing the soundboard to vibrate more freely. The dampers also fall by gravity and not by spring and are therefore more efficient. In addition, the lid can be opened wider, allowing more soundwaves to be released and greater sound projection. Grand pianos range in size from 140cm in length (or 4 ft) up to 275cm (9 ft) and above. The longer the grand piano, the longer the strings and hence longer grand pianos exhibit greater sound projection, depth of tone and provide greater expression capabilities. It is important to remember that the length measurement of a grand piano includes the keyboard. For example, the strings inside a 140cm baby grand piano are not actually 140cm long. This means that a baby grand piano’s strings are actually shorter than those in the tallest 132cm upright pianos. Baby grand pianos are perfect for new pianists and look absolutely stunning in homes. Intermediate to advanced pianists and teachers will prefer a medium grand to semi-concert sized grand. Venues will vary, depending on their size and acoustics, but larger auditoriums will most likely require a concert grand piano. Hutchings Pianos stock a wide range of new grand piano brands from around the world, at price points to suit any budget, starting from $9,995 and then at various price points all the way up to $150,000 for the most professional, premium model. |
